Filifotu Va’ai is an alumna of the Communication MA Program (2008). At UH Mānoa, she also earned a graduate certificate in Telecommunications and Information Resource Management. Her journey in the field of communication has led her to her current role as Vice President at Hawaiian Telcom, where she manages the company’s business sales channels, including enterprise, commercial, and state, and local, government sectors.

Born and raised in Samoa, Va’ai came to Hawaiʻi to continue her studies after earning a Bachelor of Commerce & Administration degree with Honors in Information Systems from the Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand and working in telecommunications for several years. Through a U.S. State Department–funded scholarship for Pacific students at the East-West Center, Va’ai arrived at UH Mānoa, where her experiences in the Communication MA and TIRM graduate certificate programs would profoundly shape both her career and worldview. She benefited not only from classes designed for professionals working in communication industries across the Pacific, but also from the cohorts and networks they brought together, in an environment that emphasized both practical training and critical thinking.

Va’ai recalls how the program pushed her to think creatively and innovatively beyond “getting the right answer the right way.” It also encouraged students to consider the broader social and community impacts of communication technologies and to act as agents of change with future-oriented mindsets. “I think one of the big takeaways I had from the program was that communication, including telecommunication, is not just linear. It’s not just networks. It’s not just technology.” These perspectives became central to Va’ai’s professional path, where she takes a holistic and human-centered approach to introducing new technologies to diverse communities. Reflecting on her journey, Va’ai describes several “full circle” moments where her academic training and industry experience intersect. Since leaving the program, she has reconnected with former classmates and professors as professional collaborators and sees how the ideas and projects she once explored in the classroom now inform the real-world work she leads today.

Following her time at UH Mānoa, she built a career in the telecommunications industry across the Pacific region, overseeing major operational development and cross-country collaborations. Va’ai returned to Hawaiʻi and joined Hawaiian Telcom in 2017, where she now serves as Vice President, leading the company’s business sales and helping to expand connectivity across the state. Her work is guided by a broader vision of ensuring that digital infrastructure serves people and communities in meaningful ways and acts as a catalyst for different sectors. She points to the company’s goal of making Hawaiʻi the first fully fiber-enabled state in the nation by the end of 2026 as a milestone she is particularly proud to be part of — one that will support education, telemedicine, and economic development across the islands. Va’ai also emphasizes the importance of courage and adaptability in her career. Relocating from Samoa to Hawaiʻi was a turning point that pushed her to trust her instincts and diversify her expertise. By leading initiatives across sales, marketing, and product strategy, she built a versatile skill set capable of navigating complex customer segments. Over the past 20 years, she has grown as an executive amid the evolving landscape of telecommunications, bringing cross-functional insights to her leadership while remaining grounded in her commitment to serving people and communities.

When asked about her advice to current students in the communication field, Va’ai encourages them to enrich their lives with all that Hawaiʻi has to offer and emphasizes the importance of building a supportive network. Beyond her professional accomplishments, Va’ai remains deeply connected to the values she developed during her time in Hawaiʻi, which helped her grow not only professionally but also as a whole person. She highlights that this sense of kuleana, or responsibility to the place and its people, is what makes Hawaiʻi truly special.

Filifotu Va’ai’s accomplishments show the power of communication in action, bringing people together, expanding access, and creating opportunities for communities across Hawaiʻi and the Pacific. Her leadership in telecommunications serves as an inspiring example for the SCI community, demonstrating how communication and information technologies can empower human connection.
